Literacy Intervention Tutor – America Reads Federal Work Study



The Community Service Associate (CSA) is responsible for work related to community service activities in a professional  setting, which provides the student with ability to become a part of a recognized community function while still attending college. The current opening is an off campus position located in Harlem and The Bronx. Please see the job description below. 

Literacy Tutors employed through Federal Work Study will assist Reading Partners in a number of ways, providing support to their Site Coordinators through tutoring, volunteer management, tutor recruitment and support with additional organizational projects. In addition to tutoring, Literacy Tutors will have the opportunity to develop additional projects based upon academic and professional development interests.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Working one-on-one with elementary school students reading below grade level, using our structured curriculum.

• Assisting in running the tutoring center, including substitute tutoring.

• Assisting in volunteer management of tutors including but not limited to: preparing and coordinating tutoring materials for volunteers; leading volunteer orientations; supporting new tutors.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must be a US citizen and/or have a US social security number (this is required in order to complete the required background check.)

• Must be highly proficient in reading and writing in English.

• Willingness to learn about tutoring strategies.

• Patience working with students who need help learning.

• Ability to work independently or with limited supervision.

• Ability to interact effectively with diverse groups.

• Ability to commit to a schedule and show up promptly when expected.

Federal Work-Study Eligibility Requirements:

Regardless of the level of the FWS position, Swedish Institute requires that each student meets the minimum requirements in order to be considered for FWS employment and to continue his/her participation in the FWS program.

· Student must have achieved GPA of 2.0, and must maintain this minimum during each semester he/she is participating in the FWS program.

· Student must have successfully completed one semester or one quarter at the Swedish Institute.

· Student must be enrolled at least half time.

· Student must meet the Federal eligibility guidelines/requirements in order to participate in FWS program (continuous enrollment is necessary) and be approved by the Swedish Institute Financial Aid Department.

Federal Work-Study funds are awarded to selected eligible applicants who have a valid completed FAFSA, and have a financial need
