What are the rules for using iPads on campus?

All members of the Swedish community are obligated to adhere to the iPad Acceptable Use Policy and Mobile Etiquette Agreement. Students who use their iPads inappropriately may face disciplinary action at the discretion of the College.

How will I learn how to use the iPad for class?

Students may learn how to use their iPads for college in seminars (e.g. Freshman Student Success) and workshops offered on campus. Information about these training sessions will be posted in the Student Orientation course (see the iTunes U app), on the campus calendar and announced through Swedish email. Students may also visit the Helpdesk with questions about the iPad.

Do I have to bring my iPad to classes?

Because the iPad will give you access to your notes, books, and other class materials, all students are required to bring their fully-charged iPads to classes daily.

What kinds of things will I use the iPad for?

While usage will vary from class to class, every faculty member will distribute handouts, books, apps, and other materials via iTunes U courses so that students may have access to study materials around the clock. Most students use their Swedish Institute iPads to take notes, study, do their reading and class work, send e-mail, and view class videos (when available). In many classes, students will also use apps to learn and study the course material.

What apps will be used in class?

All students will be given Notability and Pages for note-taking in class. Program Deans and faculty will determine which apps to use based on the needs of the course. Faculty and IT staff will help train students in the use of these apps. The iPad comes with a number of free apps that will be downloaded during Orientation and be used during the term.

Can I install my own apps?

Yes. Students may install their own apps and content on the Swedish Institute iPad. However, be sure to keep enough room on the iPad for your course materials, which are a higher priority. For help managing storage on your Swedish Institute iPad, see the Student Orientation course in iTunes U.

Are all textbooks available in an ebook format?

No, not all textbooks are currently available in a digital format. Students should check course syllabi and the Book List for information on textbook availability.

Do I have to use the digital format of the textbook (when available)?

While we recommend that you take advantage of the convenience and capabilities of digital textbooks, you may use a print copy if one is available. Most digital textbooks have enhanced features like note-taking, highlighting, search, and videos or diagrams that are not available in hard copies of the textbook. Students who are currently using iPads at Swedish Institute like the convenience of digital textbooks, in part because they don’t have to carry around heavy textbooks and can get more of their reading done during travel to and from campus.

Will iPads be permitted in tests?

This will vary and is at the discretion of the individual faculty member, program, and department. The school can, at its discretion, limit the user access to any device during specific time-frames.

What if I need an academic accommodation or specialized apps?

Students who require and are eligible for academic accommodation under the ADA must register with Student Services directly.
